Libraries are crucial to the functioning of the city of Seattle. They provide youth with a place to go after school, internet access for those who do not have internet in their homes, and books and other resources for communities around the city. They provide youth with a place to go after school, internet access for those who do not have internet in their homes, and books and other resources for communities around the city. For these reasons, I don't think any libraries should be permanently closed in the Seattle area. Instead, we could take another furlough week. Two furlough weeks would save the city about $1.3 million dollars, or roughly half the proposed cut. I think taking away libraries is unfair and unjust, and extending the furlough days would allow the libraries to remain open to the public for the rest of the year.

I think you should increase the number of furlough days in the Library system to 2 weeks instead of the 1 week you took the past two years. Instead of having the days in one consecutive block however, you should spread it out so each branch is shut down for a total of 14 days throughout the year, but the days are spread out, and if a branch is closed, the next closest branch will still be open and available to patrons. ...more »

It will save close to 1.3 million dollars and the libraries would not be closed for long periods of time and it will not cause many inconveniences for locals.

I suggest when evaluating the library budget, you should not cut any departments that have to do with community classes or programs and technology. Over 7 million people visited the Seattle Public Library in 2009, which means the library is our biggest and most important community center in thecity. I suggest the Seattle Public Library continues to purchase new databases and downloadable resources. Also, the Seattle Public Library should continue to provide free lectures and classes to the public.

Add your comment for Idea: e-book DonationsAllow us to donate e-books to the collection. I love my e-reader but the e-book collection doesn't have the greatest selection. I'm sure the overhead to add it to the collection would be on the order of minutes rather than hours with physical books, why not make an easy way for us to do it?

There are some good reasons for this, but many of those issues are an easy fix. Allow us to help

We voted for the Libraries For All bond measure because we wanted to promote literacy, community, social justice and providing information and materials to all, regardless of socioeconomic class. Taking librarians, professionals and experts on all of these issues, is NOT what Seattle voted for. Many people find that they are most productive during morning hours and that can include library research, computer usage and time for babies and toddlers 1-3 year old with their caregivers. Also, as you make improvements to libraries cultivate awareness of the Friends of Libraries and other fund raising opportunities..

People need reference help more than ever because of drastic cuts, lost jobs, and the other disasters of an unequal system. Without a librarian, all you've got is a warehouse not a library. A great way to have some staffing and for teens to gain valuable experience at the library, serving customers, learning about resources. A win-win since budgets are tight and teens want experience to apply for jobs or advanced education.
