Sustainable Parks and More Trees

Lets make our parks lower maintenance and more sustainable. Tons of grass that always needs to be mowed is expensive to maintain and is not needed. We need more natural areas with trees and ferns that require less maintenance.

Putt the driving range off the table

I suggest you...focus on keeping our existing pools and parks programs healthy. Our limited financial resources should NOT be spent on a new driving range that might create an extremely limited revenue stream in the future.

Eliminate free parking

I've noticed many cars parked all day in our park's parking lots. I suspect many are neighbors and employees of local businesses. Put in parking meters to increase revenue and discourage long term free parking for non-park users.

Open some Beer Gardens

Open a few beer gardens (REAL beer gardens) in some of the larger parks. Change some of the puritanical laws this city has if you must. I'd pay a tidy sum to have a good beer on a summer day in a park beer garden.

Do not cut Parks & Natural Area funding!

Please do NOT cut any money for Parks & Natural Areas. I work in restoration and the Parks department is *essential* for what we do. Much of the work is done by volunteers, but in order to recruit them, we NEED support from Parks!

Utilize local blogs to promote Community Center programs

Encourage Community Center staff to utilize local blogs to promote programs. Attendance will increase for affordable and valuable programs offered by Parks. Many programs are canceled due to low enrollment. Local blogs have community calendars in addition to a news feed. All are sponsored by local businesses and operate as a community soundboard.

Optionally Increased Dog License Fee

Create a new category of dog license that would permit owners of dogs under demonstrated voice control to pay for a more expensive annual license in exchange for the right to have the non-pitbull breeds of dog off leash in large grassy areas of public parks for the sole purpose of fetching/retrieving a ball or toy so long as no children are present/visible. This is similar to what New York does, and it would double revenue... more »

Annual swim memberships

Offer annual memberships (perhaps in the range of $240 to $350 a year) to public swimming pools (in addition to a per-use option). People who lap swim regularly would still consider this a good deal (over paying per-use) and you could even have an "elite tier" for frequent swimmers (for an increased annual fee) who have special lap-swim hours not available to the general public.

Play Field Lights

Shut off play field lights! Should they be in use on some rainy Tues night in March or 6pm in the summer? They are expensive and inefficient-or at least invest in some kind of user control
